Woman Health Issues During Pregnancy

By Joy J. Fine

There are very few conditions during which time woman health issues are of such importance as they are during pregnancy. After all it is not just the health of the woman that is considered but the health of the unborn baby.  Many people focus on the physical health of the woman but forget the emotional health. This can be a big mistake especially if the pregnant woman already suffers from depression.  If depression is an issue for the expectant mother then considerations of medication and what to do about taking them, or not, are of the utmost importance.

The health care provider will discuss with the woman heath worries that must be looked at during a pregnancy.  The first trimester is a time of growth and development of the unborn baby and taking any medication during this time can be of great concern. But, at the same time how does a woman suffering from depression stop taking their anti-depressants for nine months without having coping difficulties? The medication is considered bad for the baby solely based on its potential to interfere in normal growth and development.  The question that is asked is will anti-depressants cause any type of malformation of the body’s organs or any dysfunction to take place because of their use.  A woman who suffers from ongoing depressive bouts may go to see their doctor to discuss their concerns about what to do during their pregnancy. No one wants to do the wrong thing for their unborn child.

Sometimes a woman health care provider can make the worries of the patient less than they might otherwise be. There are times when it is easier for a woman to discuss medical issues with a woman instead of a male doctor. There are so many concerns during pregnancy, including the hormonal changes that can make depression even worse.  Finding the right health care provider can make a big difference to a woman during this time especially if she is dealing with more things than a simple straight forward pregnancy.

Fortunately, women who have continued using anti-depressants during their pregnancies have been shown to have no worse cases of congenital defects with their babies then those who do not take anti-depressants. The woman health care provider will be able to calm their patients concerns by explaining to them that there have been many studies about anti-depressants and pregnancy. The results have actually been pretty good. Most studies have said that taking these medications during pregnancy do not have any long term effects.  However, they do sight studies showing that newborn infants do go through a short withdrawal period after being born to mothers who take medication for depression when pregnant.  This is a short lived symptom and the babies do not suffer any long term effects from this.  So, it seems that the best thing to do for the woman who suffers from depression problems is to consult their health care providers first to see what they suggest, but to keep in mind that there is likely no big issue to be worried about.
